Awaken 02:25
Awaken - By Russell Mark I been listening to the talk in this town and it’s almost funny All people think about here are dreams that ain’t never coming We’re sleep walkers dear in a place that’s god forsaken Let’s get outta town tonight, it’s time you and I awaken. Well we done what we’re told and what has it really got us? Just walkin the line, and the daily grind, and that’s not us Well a heart can’t survive on givin’ and no takin’ Let’s get outta town tonight, it’s time you and I awaken For every dream that we’ve let go let’s drive a hundred miles And anywhere we land we’ll plant a new seed in that soil They say that change happens slow, but I want change the fast way They say yer runnin’ from your fears, but it’s not that way Yeah to know you’re alive comes from livin’, not heart achin’, Let’s get outta town tonight, it’s time you and I awaken Let’s get outta town tonight it’s time you and I awaken

Strangers 04:20
Strangers – By Dave Davies, Recorded by the Kinks Where are you going I don't mind I've killed my world and I've killed my time So where do I go what do I see I see many people coming after me So where are you going to I don't mind If I live too long I'm afraid I'll die So I will follow you wherever you go If your offered hand is still open to me Strangers on this road we are on We are not two we are one So you've been where I've just come From the land that brings losers on So we will share this road we walk And mind our mouths and beware our talk 'Till peace we find tell you what I'll do All the things that I own I will share with you And, if I feel tomorrow, like, I feel today We'll take what we want and give the rest away Strangers on this road we are on We are not two we are one Holy man and holy priest This love of life makes me weak at my knees And when we get there make your play 'Cos soon I feel you're gonna carry us away In a promised lie you made us believe For many men there is so much grief And my mind is proud but it aches with rage And, if I live too long I'm afraid I'll die Strangers on this road we are on We are not two we are one Strangers on this road we are on We are not two we are one

All Right Here - by Russell Wiener and Keren Better Another day we’re given here To laugh and to sing While the world is living in fear We will face the storm In this place for you and me And into my mind comes A forgotten melody La la la la, La la la la, La la la la la la We’re like family (family) From far and near (from far and near) Wherever we are, we’re all right here We’re like distant stars (distant stars) We form stories clear (stories clear) Wherever we are, we’re all right here The time has come to spread our wings Oh how the time flies I’ve found such beautiful things Here where I belong The place that I feel free And into my mind comes A forgotten melody La la la la, La la la la, La la la la la la We’re like family (family) From far and near (from far and near) Wherever we are, we’re all right here We’re like distant stars (distant stars) Our stories appear From wherever we are, we’re all right here From wherever we are, we’re all right here Wherever we are, we’re all right here

My Great Escape - lyrics by Russell Wiener I brought you in this world for me You’re everything I am afraid to be I made you old and gray Rejected and dismayed And now with my own eyes I see The mess I made, the mess you’re in My selfish deeds my foolish pen Do you believe your own foul words? I don’t know but of this I’m sure You’ll be better in the end And I was your everything And now I set you free Now I set you free, you’re on your own tonight And you were my great escape I needed you with me But now I set you free, so long, goodbye Now take the wheel it’s time for you To do everything I was afraid to do The world is not so bleak As you see in your leak It’s all just waiting there for you And I was your everything And now I set you free Now I set you free, you’re on your own tonight And you were my great escape I needed you with me But now I set you free, so long, goodbye And you were my everything And now I say goodbye Now I say good luck, so long, goodbye.

Hard to be Mad – by Russell Wiener Well I saw you last weekend at the party And I held my tongue or you would have been sorry But now to see you like that Man it’s just sad And it’s so hard to be mad at ya now Well I try to be civil but the fact is That you never apologize for how you’ve acted But to see you like this All in a mess It’s so hard to be pissed at you now And it’s hard to see the good side When you’ve already made up your mind And it’s hard to admit that you could change But only if life turns unkind for The people that are causing you the most stress Yeah the toxic, the sick, and the self-obsessed But every origin tale Has shit that turns ya pale So I don’t wanna rail on ya now And it’s hard to see the good side When you’ve already made up your mind And it’s easy to think that you’ve changed Well I guess you’ll find out when you try to rise above So the next time that I see you at a party I’ll walk up and say I already know you’re sorry And before you take it bad I’ll slap you on the back And say man, I ain’t mad at ya now Well you haven’t changed an ounce You’re acting like your same old self But it’s hard to be mad at ya now Yes it’s hard to be mad at ya now It’s so hard to be mad at ya now

Let It In 05:07
LET IT IN – Lyrics Russell Wiener I recognize you in an instant From a distance I can see your smiling face So familiar yet so different Like a whole new you is shining through your lace Your father walks beside you But so do ghosts and voices and Every choice you’ve made that led you here Your story’s is starting over And nothing’s gonna be the same The same ones that once held you shed their tears So close your eyes and let it in (Let it, let it in) for the ones that need you (Let it, let it in) the spirits that feed you For the ones that make you whole Close your eyes and let it in (Let it, let it in) for your song they’re listening (Let it, let it in) now there’s nothing missing It’s the silver and the gold I gaze upon you and I’m weightless In a haze your face is all that I can see And everybody else is faceless But their joyous song is just for you and me I dance and swirl beside you In a blur of toasting voices And everyone else seems to disappear, Your glass is bubbling over You feel you finally found your way The way opens before you, no more fear So close your eyes and let it in (Let it, let it in) for the ones that need you (Let it, let it in) the spirits that feed you For the ones that make you whole Close your eyes and let it in (Let it, let it in) for your song they’re listening (Let it, let it in) now there’s nothing missing It’s the silver and the gold Let it in Close your eyes and let it in This is your song they’ll listen Now there’s nothing missing It’s the silver and the gold The silver and the gold

Canyonlands 04:35
Canyonlands – by Russell Wiener I am stranded, empty-handed You got me waiting here for you If you find me I’ll go with you Take me where the stars are new We’ll walk along the valley floor Golden moonbeams fill the air Looking towards the city lights And walk until they aren’t there Why do you keep talking now When there’s no sound among the stars? Nobody is listening We’ve come out a bit too far Looking backwards in the traffic Watching street signs, wanting magic As we stop our minds will open But you can’t close them once they’re broken We’ll walk along the city streets Neon glow above our heads Through the crowds and speeding cars Trying to escape our past Why are you so silent now When everything stands in our way? But if we make it out alive Will canyon walls crumble away?
8.
Honest Mechanic Gone Bad – by Russell Wiener An honest mechanic gone bad My honest mechanic gone bad He used to be so fair But he’s moved into a fancy place The pressure’s on to make a sale Now I face the dragons again Now I face the dragons again Now I face the dragons again Now Another honest mechanic gone bad Finding a new mechanic will drive me mad You used to have my back, but come on man You’re stealing from my family You’re talking ‘bout things that they don’t need You’re lying to my family You’re lying and I’m crying stop And they say go somewhere else I got a guy But on principle I lie Now I face the dragons again Now I face the dragons again Now I face the dragons again I face the dragons I face the dragons again

about

Hello. We are the Nextdoors - Mika Larson, cello, and Russell Mark, guitar/keys/vocals. We have been playing music together from literally the moment we met. We even played on stage together at our wedding!

We had an idea years ago to start writing songs based on the most eye-rolling and melodramatic posts that appear on the Nextdoor neighborhood social media site/app, thus we named our duo The Nextdoors.

But then the pandemic happened, and when we were isolated from our other bands and music projects, we slowly started recording an album of "regular" original songs, not based on our original concept. And this is that album! **

Mika's cello and strings bring such life and character to my songs, and such a powerful sound - it was great fun to record together. Included here are old songs re-worked and re-upped... new songs written over COVID... heck, one was even co-written by myself and someone I've never actually met - only over Zoom. There's more on each song in the liner notes on the individual tracks.

Strangers is the only cover on the EP, a classic Kinks song that that has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and was a favorite of my older sister Linda too. We lost her to cancer in June 2020, and we recorded and filmed a live version of this song in our living room on her birthday in 2021. We then fleshed out that live performance to create what you hear here. You can find the video on YouTube too.

This album is named after and dedicated to Linda - in fact the bugs and flowers on the cover were drawn by her.

Please enjoy, share it with a friend, and we hope to see you out there in the world soon.

** Oh, but, in fact the last song here is our first foray into our original concept. It would probably have been Linda's fave! Feel free to share your favorite Nextdoor.com posts with us for future inspiration!
